Because I Think It's Just Crass

A day at the market

I can't get sucked into that celebrity thing, because I think it's just crass. Delete the negative; accentuate the positive! I'm used to always deciding everything myself. It's a blessing, but also a terrible defect. Men have got more of a discerning eye. They appreciate cut and details, things that aren't so obvious. They like things that have cachet and gentlemanliness. I get ideas about what's essential when packing my suitcase.

Online media is increasingly influential in fashion. For me, art is about learning and about living with people. It's alive. I am always locked in my design studio. I like the things around me to be beautiful and slightly dreamy, with a feeling of worldliness. Fashion can be this mysterious thing that you can't explain.

Success isn't about the end result, it's about what you learn along the way. I try to contrast; life today is full of contrast... We have to change. I don't like trends. They tend to make everybody look the same. I have a fantastic relationship with money. I use it to buy my freedom. First I made a dress because I was pregnant and I wanted to be the most beautiful pregnant woman. Then I made a sweater because I wanted to have one that wasn't like anyone else's.

A day at the market

You cannot be creative with people around you. Never in my wildest dreams did I entertain the idea that I would become a fashion designer. I remember walking the dog one day, I saw a car full of teenage girls, and one of them rolled down the window and yelled, 'Marc Jacobs!' in a French accent. It's sometimes said that I'm rebellious and I do things to push people's buttons, but I just like the challenge. A lot of self-importance goes on in the fashion industry. I'm not like that.

It truly was a great day at the market.

I am especially grateful that I have been able to keep my own style over the decades, in spite of the many changes that have taken place in the world of fashion and in its business. Dressing is a way of life. You have to always work against what you did before, and even against your taste. You have to stay true to your heritage; that's what your brand is about. Vanity is the healthiest thing in life.
